During the Nguyen Dynasty, the current location of the War Remnants Museum was the building of Khai Tuong Pagoda. By the time the French invaded Vietnam, the temple was completely demolished by the French government to replace it as a mansion. To be more specific, in 1880, the colonial authorities had demolished the temple.
The War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
In the 1930s, the War Remnants Museum was a lawyer's office and was hired by Dr. Henriette Bui as a gynecologist and obstetrician in 1940. Later, the French government requisitioned the mansion and then transferred it to the Saigon University Institute as the headquarters for the Saigon Medical University in 1947.
Only after 1975, when the Vietnamese country was liberated from the hands of the American imperialists, this place became a museum, recording historical events, war traces or displaying artifacts related to the fight against the aggressors.
This is where many valuable historical relics are displayed
This museum was established on September 4, 1975, with the name “American-Vietnamese puppet exhibit gallery”. On November 10, 1990, the place was changed to “Gallery of war crimes of aggression”. On July 4, 1995 (one week before US President Bill Clinton announced the normalization of diplomatic relations with Vietnam), this museum was renamed the “War Remnants Museum” and has been kept like that until nowadays.

The place is located in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City
The museum consists of 3 floors, each floor has its own theme and artifacts. On the first floor of the museum is the ticket office, multipurpose room, the world room supporting Vietnam resistance. One of the outstanding stops on the first floor is the “Tiger Cages” - a type of jail in Con Dao prison. The tiger cages are considered the most terrible torture place of the US army for patriotic prisoners. Here, patriotic revolutionary communists were confined in cells of only about 5 square meters, without beds, or large windows. All they had to endure was the darkness, the damp, stuffy atmosphere that made ordinary people feel crazy, just like the other people were shackled together.

Not only that but “Tiger cages” is also a place where torture scenes are extremely painful, to destroy the will and power of patriotic people. The first floor is also a place to display large artifacts such as aircraft, tanks or artillery pieces of soldiers or American soldiers in the war days.
The photos of the war in the Museum
The ground floor of the museum consists of images as well as historical landmarks. With many fascinating topics such as The World with the Vietnam War or The Story of the Victims of Thư War, the place has attracted many history lovers from the world.
