For those who haven’t known yet, Cu Chi Tunnels is an underground defense system in Cu Chi District, located 70 kilometers to the Northwest from the center of Ho Chi Minh City. This underground tunnel system includes infirmary, multiple rooms, kitchen, storage, office, etc with a total length of 200 kilometers – which makes it a very impressive structure.
The paradigm of the Cu Chi Tunnels system
Each tunnel in Cu Chi Tunnels is about 400 to 500 meters apart, connecting through the tunnel. All of these vaults were built in areas of gravelly solid soil. First, the tunnel was formed as a deep pit, 2 meters wide, 3.5 meters wide and 3.5 meters deep (including the roof of the tunnel which is 1.8 meters apart from the ground).

The tunnel roof is made of concrete, then completely filled on top. In the tunnel, the sides of the walls are A-shaped bearing columns. Some tunnels have waterproof cement plaster. The mouth of the tunnel connects the tunnel through a guard post. From here, the tunnel was splitted in two. A special tunnel leads to the edge of the Saigon River and pops up in the bush.

Cu Chi Tunnels have entered the history of the heroic struggle of the Vietnamese people as a legend of the 20th century and became a famous landmark in the world. This is a unique battle wonder with a unique 200 kilometers tunnels spread like spider web under the ground. Thanks to the system of tunnels, fortifications as well as trenches, soldiers and people of Cu Chi had fought extremely heroically and established miraculous victories.

Cu Chi Tunnels were formed during the resistance war against French colonialism from 1946 to 1948. During this time, people of Tan Phu Trung and Phuoc Vinh An communes dug short, simple sections to hide documents and weapons. Residents dug individual tunnels to avoid the raids of the French army and to provide shelter for the Viet Minh soldiers. Each village built a separate tunnel, then due to the need to travel between the villages, the tunnel system was connected to form a continuous, complex tunnel system, which later expanded.
The entrance into the Cu Chi Tunnels area
In many places, especially 6 communes in the North of Cu Chi, the structure of tunnels had been improved to become a place to hide forces. During the fight, the ancient Vietnamese can contact and support each other.

The tunnels were constructed in many ways, but mostly under the ground, with one entrance for going in and out, barely larger than a man’s shoulder. When the gate was closed, it was difficult for enemies to discover the tunnels. Vietnamese soldiers lived in the enemy area, hiding in secret bunkers at night, then coming out of the ground at night to do their works.
The tunnels only have some small entrance such as this one
Entering the period of anti-American imperialism, Cu Chi Tunnels flourished, especially in early 1966. The revolution of digging the tunnels became more and more vigorous. Everywhere, from young to old people, boys and girls all joined to create a tunnel to fight the enemy. Only by means of very rudimentary tools and hoes, such as the earth-shovel made of bamboo, soldiers, and people of Cu Chi had created a massive construction with hundreds of kilometers of underground roads across the earth, connecting the hamlets and villages. And that is the Cu Chi Tunnels we see today.
