The Mekong Delta in Vietnam is full of canals, with water flowing from days to days, boats driven by locals people in both days and nights, going through all corners of the rivers. These kinds of sceneries have been existing in thousands of years, but it remains the same until nowadays. Rivers are typical topographic of the Western area of Vietnam, in here the rivers and canals winding and twisting together just like spider webs. And on those exact rivers is where local people sail their boats, exchanging products, selling and buying things, creating the unique aspect of the Mekong Delta. Those are what we call “floating markets”.
The floating markets have been a significant feature of the Mekong Delta religion
The floating markets are held all day but is most crowded in the morning, when the weather is still cool, the fog spreads on the surface of the river and the sun is still soft. If you want to explore the floating markets, you should come early. Because when the sun rises, the heat slowly become unbearable, there won’t be as crowded in the markets. Almost every Mekong Delta tour has floating market as one of its itinerary, and most visitors are truly impressed by the stunning landscapes here.
Unlike normal markets, in floating markets, sellers do not need to advertise and shout for customers to pay attention to them. Therefore, the sceneries are not noisy or rushing, buyers and visitors can slowly enjoy their peaceful shopping without getting overwhelmed.
The sceneries in floating markets are crowded but not too noisy
One of the interesting things in floating markets is that the locals often hung their products on a 3.5-meter pole, so visitors can see it from afar and acknowledge what they are selling. This whole idea, which means promoting goods on the spot, has created a distinctive and prominent feature of the Western floating markets. If you ever visit Mekong Delta or join a Mekong Delta tour, this is something you should pay attention to.
Although the markets are located on the river, it almost does not lack any kinds of products, from needles, thread to foods, household items, etc. Apart from a few differences, the floating markets in Mekong Delta still have some significant features of a normal market, for example, selling coffee, dishes, breakfast, etc. So visitors can actually buy and eat the food right on top of the water surface.
There are various types of products on floating markets
Besides, the floating markets, especially the Cai Rang market, also have small boats that sell different fruits for visitors. You can eat right on the spot or buy as gifts for relatives. The fruits here are freshly picked from the garden, and there are many different types to choose from. It will not be difficult for you to encounter some fruits such as orange, mango, durian, etc. Especially, these garden fruits are very delicious and beautiful, worth to be a highlight in the Cai Rang floating market tour.
Of all the amazing activities you can do in the floating markets, aside from seeing, buying products, having breakfast right on the boat while floating on the water surface probably is the most exciting one. The dishes in floating markets are all traditional, simple food in the local area, but it will taste very different if you have it in the middle of the river.
Especially in Cai Rang floating market, you really cannot skip a bowl of hu tieu. Sure you have enjoyed through lots of different kinds of hu tieu with different flavors, but the dish right at Cai Rang floating market will give you a different experience and taste. Hu tieu in Cai Rang, Can Tho are usually very clear, chewy, smooth, made with sweet, fragrant broth, combined with a few pieces of meat, beautifully sliced beef balls, little sprouts as well as green chives. The dish delivers such a strong and appetizing aroma that will make your insides melt.
Enjoying a bowl of hu tieu in Cai Rang floating market is absolute wonderful
Plus the refreshing and airy weather on the wide river, the sound of the boats going left and right everywhere and the bustling calls of tourists have contributed to creating a bustling and bold atmosphere of the water area, making your breakfast more unique and special than ever. This is what makes Mekong Delta tours are appreciated and hunted by foreign travelers.
The people in the Mekong Delta religion are extremely friendly and hospitable as well. Each local often greet you with a smile and make you feel absolutely welcome. If the market is not too busy, some locals even tell you their stories, about how their family has been selling on the floating markets for years, about their products and traditions. All of which will make you feel closer to the people and atmosphere here.
