The Cu Chi Tunnels area is an in-ground defense system in Cu Chi District, located 70 kilometers northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. This system was dug up by the National Liberation of Southern Vietnam during the Indochina War and the Vietnam War.
The tunnel system consists of the infirmary, many rooms, kitchen, storage, office, underground road system. The tunnel system is about 200 kilometers long and has ventilation systems in place of shrubs. Cu Chi Tunnels was built on the so-called “steel land”, located at the end of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. During the 1968 Tet Offensive, the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam used this tunnel to attack Saigon.
The entrance to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels area
The tunnel is dug on an area of lateritic clay, so it is durable and less prone to erosion. The tunnel system is located deep underground, can withstand the destructive power of the largest blockbusters of the US military. The air is drawn into the tunnel through the vents. Different areas of the tunnel can be isolated as needed.
The tunnel is 3 to 8 meters deep in the ground, the height is only enough for one person to stoop. The first basement at the edge of the forest has an underground well that provides drinking water and living for the entire tunnel. The tunnel system consists of 3 floors, from the “backbone” radiating countless long, short branches connecting each other, with branches extending to the Saigon River. The ground floor is 3 meters from the ground, resistant to shells and the weight of tanks, armored vehicles.
One of the many entrances to get into the tunnels
The 2nd floor is 5 meters from the ground, able to resist small bombs. And the last floor is 8 -10 meters under the ground. The way up and down between basements is arranged by secret hatches.
